Hi all,
I can’t find the e-mail anymore, but I SWEAR a few weeks ago Shopify sent out an e-mail explicitly stating they would NOT be increasing shipping rates this holiday season. But this week all of the rates went up.
Am I hallucinating?

Hi @JPHB85
Shipping rates are calculated by the shipping carriers, not by Shopify. Using Shopify Shipping to purchase your labels allows you to receive our commercial discount, but the base price of the shipping rates are not set by us.
I am not sure about any email sent out by our team that refers to shipping rates, but if you do find one please don’t hesitate to share a screenshot of it here. I am happy to look into that further.
@Shay I am aware that Shopify does not set shipping rates. Here is the e-mail they sent. Seems pretty shady to send this and then the prices increase. Even if there was a standard increase from the shipping companies, then Shopify should have announced NORMAL increases rather than claiming they would not be increasing. We’ve always received notifications in the past from Shopify when there were normal rate increases.
Thank you so much for the screenshot of the email @JPHB85 ! That definitely helped me in tracking down what happened here.
To confirm, was the shipping labels you purchased USPS Priority Mail labels, by chance? If yes, then the increase you saw was not related to a holiday shipping surcharge, but a normal shipping increase pushed out by USPS. The timing of this shipping cost increase unfortunately happened to coincide with the release of this email. But I can confirm that the increases you saw were normal increases and not a holiday surcharge.
I do appreciate your feedback on this topic though and I have shared it with the relevant teams for consideration in future communications!
