Shopify Search & Descovery

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner is struggling with the Search & Discovery app’s price filter, which displays prices excluding VAT instead of including it, since product prices were entered without VAT.

Core Issue:
Shopify’s native Search & Discovery app always filters by the catalog “price” field (pre-tax). There is no backend setting to switch the filter to tax-inclusive amounts.

Proposed Solutions:

  1. Enable “Include tax in prices” in Settings → Markets → [Market] → Tax settings, then update product prices to be VAT-inclusive or apply a market price adjustment (+VAT%).

  2. Use Markets price lists/adjustments to set VAT-inclusive prices for specific markets (e.g., EU) while maintaining ex-VAT pricing in other regions.

Limitations:
If prices remain entered excluding VAT, the filter will continue using those pre-tax values. The only workaround outside of adjusting Shopify’s price settings is implementing a custom front-end filter, which the original poster wants to avoid. Multiple respondents confirmed there is no server-side solution beyond changing how prices are stored in the catalog.

A client of mine has entered their prices excluding VAT in Shopify, which means that the product price filtering via Search & Discovery is based on prices excluding VAT instead of including VAT.

Has anyone experienced this and knows if it’s possible to change this filter behavior in Shopify to filter on the price including VAT ?

Since it’s regarding money and taxes I don’t want to filter this in the Frontend, but rather looking for a fix in Shopify.

One approach may be to use metafields and mirror prices there.
Though the frontend UI might not be what’s wanted.

Search & Discovery and other such introductory free apps are the bare minimum.
So will work with first class data available directly without any other business considerations or logic conditions.
If the option doesn’t exist in the apps it’s either get a better app or advanced theme customizations.

Hey @Bwunkaz — short + straight:

No, Shopify’s Search & Discovery price filter always uses the catalog “price” (pre-tax). There isn’t a server-side toggle to make it filter on tax-inclusive amounts.

Ways to make the filter reflect VAT-inclusive prices

  1. Switch the market to “Include tax in prices.”
Settings → Markets → (your market) → Tax settings → Include tax in prices.
Then set VAT-inclusive prices (either update product prices or use a market price adjustment to add +VAT%). Once the base price is VAT-inclusive, the filter will match it.

  2. Use Markets price lists/adjustments to push VAT-inclusive prices for EU markets while keeping ex-VAT in your primary market. The filter indexes whatever price is active for that market.

If you keep entering prices excluding VAT, the built-in price filter will continue to segment by those ex-VAT values. The only alternative is a custom front-end filter, which you said you’d rather avoid.

Hi @Bwunkaz Shopify’s price filter always uses catalog “price” (pre-tax), no backend toggle for tax-inclusive.

To reflect VAT-inclusive:

  • Enable Include tax in prices (Settings → Markets → [Market] → Tax settings).
  • Set VAT-inclusive prices or add a +VAT% market adjustment.
  • Filter indexes whatever price is active for that market.

If a price is entered before VAT, the filter will keep the price before VAT. The only solution is to use a custom filter in the frontend, which you are avoiding.

Hope this help.
