Shopify Store Redirect Issues, and Compromised Website Problem

Hello,

I have two shopify stores running, and an issue came up where one shopify store had some pages that were redirecting to the other one. For example clicking to go to the contact page for one would send it to the contact page to the other store. I resolved this by deleting and remaking a couple of the pages, but has anyone run into this issue before?

My main concern is there might be other redirects that I am not aware of.

Also google has suspended some of the campaigns for one of my websites (the other store is not advertising on google yet) citing a “compromised website” and I’m wondering of the two issues are related.

It sounds like you may have encountered an issue with unwanted redirects, which could be related to Google’s “compromised website” flag. Here’s a breakdown of the situation and some steps to help you identify and fix any remaining issues:

Possible Causes and Fixes for Redirects1. Check for Hard-Coded Links in Theme Code:

  • In some cases, links between stores are hard-coded directly in the theme code, such as in header.liquid, footer.liquid, or specific template files.
  • Go to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit Code, and search for the other store’s URL to see if any residual links are coded into the theme. Replace them with the correct URLs if you find any.
  1. Review SEO and Redirect Settings in Shopify:

    • In Shopify’s Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects, check if any URL redirects are set to point from one store to another. Sometimes, redirects may be set accidentally, causing pages to redirect to the wrong site.
    • Also, check your SEO settings for the deleted pages, as some themes may have retained SEO metadata from the other store if you imported themes or content.
  2. Run a Full Site Scan with Google Search Console:

    • Add both of your sites to Google Search Console and run a scan to identify any redirect issues or other pages flagged as “compromised.” This tool can reveal whether Google detected any unusual behavior or harmful redirects.
    • You can also request Google to rescan your site after any issues are resolved.
  3. Check for Potential Malware or Unwanted Code:

    • Since Google flagged one store as “compromised,” use a tool like Sucuri SiteCheck or Google’s Safe Browsing tool to scan for malware or harmful scripts. Malware could cause unexpected redirects and impact site security.
    • You may also want to install a security app from the Shopify App Store, like MalCare or Netsparker, to check for any malicious code.
  4. Clear Browser Cache and Test Redirects on Multiple Devices:

    • Clear your browser cache to avoid cached redirects, and test the site on different browsers and devices. This helps ensure you’re seeing the current version of the site and can verify that all redirects are functioning properly.
  5. Request Google Ads Support for Review:

    • Google’s “compromised website” warning could be related to the redirects, but it might also stem from detected vulnerabilities. Once you’ve reviewed and addressed potential issues, you can contact Google Ads support to request a review of your campaigns.
  6. Set Up Ongoing Monitoring:

    • Consider setting up regular site monitoring to catch future issues with redirects or compromised pages. Apps like Uptime Robot or Google Analytics alerts can notify you if unusual behavior or redirects occur again.
