Shopify USPS label barcodes suddenly not printing correctly

Since this morning, Shopify produces a proper-looking pdf with the label for printing, but the barcodes and qr codes on the printed label don’t look like what I see on-screen in acrobat–much lower resolution it seems, with narrow lines not resolved at all (so, useless). All the text on the printed label is fine. USPS labels from other sources print fine.

I see Shopify has changed their USPS label provider? or just the format of the label? I’d guess the printing problem is related to this change

Has anyone else noticed this? Any solutions? I’ve had to screenshot the labels from acrobat and print them as images from photo editing software.

I found the solution to this problem this morning, which appears to be fairly specific to the printer (Zebra ZT-220) and driver (Zdesigner ZT220-300dpi ZPL).

The problem is how the driver was handling the bar and QR codes, which are images.

The solution was to switch the image printing technique setting in the driver to “Clipart” from “Dithered.” It’s the dithering that widened the narrow bars of the barcode until they overlapped.

Thank you. That fixed it for me with my ZT230. You saved me a lot of time. I would assume it would be the same for any thermal printer that has dithering settings as photo instead of clipart. Dithering settings don’t usually change barcodes and I’m sure it will get fixed soon, but in the meantime I hope I don’t get a bunch of packages returned. I only noticed the issue today, I hope the other packages from last week don’t get sent back to me. (I would assume they will deliver them using the address but they won’t track) I should probably stick to using Ship Station in general to be on the safer side.
