Dear Shopify UX Designers,
Why do you keep adding more clicks to the workflow of the Shopify admin? Any UX designer should know that the more a customer has to click/tap, the more of a barrier it creates between the user and the sale. Similarly, it creates more friction for the user of any software program from achieving their tasks. Simply put: The more clicks required, the longer it takes to complete a task.
So again I’ll ask, why do the Shopify UX designers keep adding more clicks to Shopify admin?
The most recent increase in required clicks is during the process of creating an order manually. Before the most recent change, when editing the shipping/delivery of an order, an admin would click the link to render the shipping modal. There was a list of options with radio buttons. ONE click to chose an option, then one more click to close the modal.
NOW, when clicking the ‘Edit shipping/delivery’, the modal pops up with only two options, a drop down menu or a ‘custom’ option. So to choose something from the dropdown menu, I am forced to click/tap to reveal the dropdown menu, then forced to click/tap again to choose from the dropdown menu.
This change increased the required clicks by 50%.
Another change that happened last year was the user flow of adding a discount to a product of a manual order. Before the change, applying a discount amount or discount percentage was an option in a list format. There was a radio button next to each one and one of them was selected by default (amount). If I want to choose the non-default selection (percentage, which is always how we calculate discounts), we now must click once to display the dropdown list of TWO options, and then click again to choose ‘percentage’.
A dropdown menu should NEVER be created for only two options. Just display the second option!!!
This change increased the required clicks by 50%.
Furthermore, the UX team could drastically reduce the number of clicks by allowing the user to edit multiple product prices/quantities in a single modal and have all the changes apply once the modal is closed, rather than force the user to edit each one of these individually.
Stop with all of the efficiency blocking steps! It’s adding time to our workflows and pushes me further and further towards a different ecommerce platform all together.
Respectfully,
A former UX Designer and Product Manager for Front-End Web Development
