Trying to decide whether I should go with WisePad 3 card machine for the integration or with a third party provider that might be a bit cheaper over all.
If I process an in store payment with a credit card or debit card via the Shopify POS is it just the 1.7% of the transaction that is charged or are there any transaction fees charged by the card provider?
Also for any other transactions such as cash, cheque, local vouchers, One4All vouchers and split payments, are there any transaction fees for in store transactions?
Is the 1.7% charge per transaction regardless of the payment type ?
Trying to make a decision like this with a lot of coffee is probably not the best idea.
Thank you for reaching out and posting this question!
If you’re using Shopify Payments, then the cost of using Shopify Payments would be based on your subscription plan. You can find the credit card processing rates for in-person transactions on our pricing page. For example, the in-person rates for Shopify Payments on Shopify Basic in the US is currently 2.7%, so you may be referring to the 1.7% transaction fee charged by Shopify when using a third-party gateway.
That being said, if your external or third-party payment provider offers something lower than 2.7%, then you can absolutely use them with Shopify POS as an external card reader. Since the transactions aren’t processed by Shopify when using external card readers or terminals, you wouldn’t be subject to any transaction fees from Shopify and you can simply mark the orders as paid on Shopify POS. However, it’s important to note that Shopify does collect a transaction fee when using third-party gateways for online sales, as the transaction is processed through Shopify’s checkout.
As for accepting cash, cheques, or local vouchers in-person (Shopify POS), you wouldn’t be charged a transaction fee as these methods of payments also don’t go through Shopify’s checkout. However, if you’re processing a manual credit payment, where the customer’s credit card isn’t present, then this would be similar to an online sale and credit card processing/transaction rates would apply. Nevertheless, split payments would be based on the payment methods involved.
