In Europe, we typically work with flat-rate shipping—once a customer reaches a certain threshold, shipping is free, regardless of location.
For us, that threshold is €45. However, we’ve noticed a few issues in the checkout process:

A customer might think they’re paying €25, but at checkout, an additional €4.95 shipping fee appears, which can feel like an unpleasant surprise.

If a customer’s total is, for example, €44, Shopify still charges the €4.95 shipping fee, as it only considers the subtotal before shipping.
My questions:

Is there a way to display a subtotal that includes shipping costs in the cart drawer?

Can we add a collapsible field in the cart drawer for entering a discount code?

Would it be possible to add a progress bar or a small message like: “Spend X more for free shipping”?

Since shipping is calculated only after the user enters the address (which happens at checkout), but in your case since there’s only one shipping method, it can be coded in if required.
Instaed what I’d suggest is a progress bar or a simple text that mentions that free shipping is only above €45 subtotal
This way the customer is not spooked when they head to checkout

Ideally this should be a feature that is supported by your theme itself, most themes have built in support for this. I’d suggest to reach out to your theme developer first to see if they have this in plan / already supported. So that way you need not build it custom
It’s fairly easy to implement and I’m sure the plethora of partners here can help with this

The main issue we’re facing, though, is that Shopify still displays “Shipping calculated at checkout”, even though we use fixed shipping rates. I want customers to see their full total upfront, including shipping, rather than waiting until checkout to know the final price.

Yes, you have to use a 3-rd parrty app to make it happen. Here’s how to set it up:
P/s: I’ll use BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell app as an example. If you’re interested, you can try it for free.
- Set up a “Spend $X get freeshipping” (using Spend X amount to get gift(s) template)
- Under Cart value condition, fill in the min amount of money customers have to buy
- Choose Shipping discount as gift → percentage = 100%
- Set up a Progress bar as I’ve done below (rules have to be the same with the offer you set up above)
