So I have created smart collections for the different colours (or timbers in my case) my products come in, and it works beautifully, displaying all the products that come in those variants.
However the display images are all for the default colour. Is there a way to force it to show the variant colour instead???
For example, this page is for a Red colour variant, but as you can see all the products are in a light timber, not the red timber:

Yes it’s possible but needs customization.
We need to provide an option using metafields for admin to select which color option will be default for the collection.
In your case for collection “red-gum-chopping-boards” if admin selects 2nd option then variant red gum will be default and the same result will appear when they click on the product. At the moment it displays the default image and on click of the product display default variant selected.

That sounds promising… any thoughts on how to go about that? it is a pretty big job? its not something its absolutely need but would be good to have for sure.

You can organize the variant from admin and check
Not big but yes a developer needs a few hours to complete it.
