I would like to have my variant added to the collection page. We are using Athens, does anybody know a good app for this, or have a code snippet for me to insert?

Did you check your theme settings, is there any option available to enable variant option to collection grid ?
If no, then this needs to be coded according to your theme code. I recommend you to seek help of a developer to set this up for you at reasonable rate.
