Social Media Sharing Facebook Open Graph cropping square product image

Topic summary

A Shopify store owner using the Distinctive theme faces an issue where square product images (wine bottles) get cropped incorrectly when shared on Facebook. The Open Graph default 1.91:1 ratio cuts off the top and bottom of vertically-oriented bottles.

Proposed Solution:

  • Create a metafield to upload a custom social sharing image (1200x630 pixels recommended by Facebook)
  • This allows specifying a different image for Open Graph tags instead of using the default square product photo
  • The custom image would display properly without cropping the bottle

Status: The discussion remains open with a technical workaround suggested but not yet confirmed as implemented.

Hi there,

I use the Distinctive theme by Fuel themes, and we have square product images as default. When Product pages are shared to Facebook, it crops the main product image/featured image to the standard FB 1.91:1 ratio.

Our product is wine, so the bottles vertically fill the square, when cropped you lose the top and bottom of the wine bottle.

Is there a way to make sure this doesn’t happen? Or have it select a different image by changing the OG code?

Surely most shopify websites with square images (isn’t that most of them?) have this issue?

Thanks

Hi @Sara_wildflower ,

Facebook currently supports 1200x630 pixel images well, refer link

So if you want, you need to create Metafield to upload only the image displayed when sharing social.

This image uses the default size and it will display fine.

I hope it helps!
