was the theme customized or are you using a third party app?
If any changes were made recently including installing frontend affecting apps, restore a theme backup or disable new apps and retest.
Further UX issue,
That area should say “filter products” not "sort products’ as there is already a different sort dropdown.
Unless you’ve ab-tested that to prove customers need that your probably created unnecessary confusion.
