Split Checkout with different ship options, tax, payment for In Stock and Pre Arrival products in same cart

We are a wine retailer setting up our new site. We have In Stock products in the Warehouse that can ship or be picked up. We also have Pre Arrival products in the Warehouse that can only be sent to Storage. What we want is if mixed In Stock and Pre Arrival products in the cart, at the checkout page to split the products and present the different ship options (with ship address) for the product types separately. Display two subtotals including products, shipping, tax for each of the two order types, then a combined Total for both orders. Upon submitting, creates two Orders with their separate shipping option, address, cost. We have OrderSplit Pro installed, I have the Shopify ‘Split Shipping’ feature turned on. This has gotten us to the point of showing two ship options for the two different products, but only a single shipping address applies to both orders, which causes tax discrepancies. Can a combination of native Shopify and OrderSplit Pro provide what we need, or another app?

Wine’s honestly one of the harder versions of this, because you’ve got the pre-arrival side where stock might not land for months, and if any of it’s sitting in bond you’ve got a duty/tax difference on top. So you’re not really splitting shipping, you’re splitting timelines and sometimes duty status too.

The annoying truth is Shopify can’t do all of that in one checkout. Split Shipping in Checkout will let the customer pick and pay shipping separately for the in-stock vs pre-arrival group, but underneath it’s still one order and one payment capture, and you can’t set proper separate tax or payment terms per group at checkout. So it covers part of the shipping question and none of the tax/payment one.

What most people in your spot end up doing is splitting the order into two after it’s placed, so the in-stock wine ships and invoices now and the pre-arrival sits as its own order until it arrives. How fiddly that is depends on what you’re running behind Shopify. If it all lives in Shopify you can do it by hand per order. If you’re pushing orders into an ERP, check what that system does with a mixed order first, because a lot of them freeze the whole thing until every line is available, and that’s usually the real bottleneck rather than Shopify.

For transparency I’m a Shopify Partner, I built a small app called nohold that does this split automatically for stores on Brightpearl, since that’s the ERP where I kept seeing it bite. Probably not your setup, but happy to talk you through the post-order split either way, the logic’s the same whatever you’re on.

HI @kjacobs .
Hope you are doing great.

Shopify native shipping only allows on e adrress for both orders.
That’s likely why you are seeing tax issues.

Ask Ordersplit Pro support if they support separating addresses per split order.
If not, search the app store for split shipping or multi-address checkout apps.

Some are made just for this.
