STOCK OFF SALE (except dropshipping items)

We are relocating our retail store and would like to host a stock-off sale, both online and in-store, with discounts of up to 50% on all existing stock, excluding specific high-rotation items (such as dog treats) and dropshipping products.

What would be the recommended approach to implement this? Should we create a discount code that is automatically applied at checkout, or update the discounted prices directly in the back office using the “compare-at price” feature?

Probably for your situation, especially if you have varying sale %, I would go with compare-at price, because it’s customer facing and styled in most themes, where discounted price is generally hidden until checkout.

For a stock-clearance sale, I’d actually recommend combining two approaches to achieve the most effective stock clearance:

  1. Use compare-at price to create a strong “on sale” visual → customers immediately see the discount & will want to explore that product.
  2. Then layer a tiered discount to get customers to buy even more in one order → this is what actually accelerates volume clearance.

Here are 3 tiered discount options I highly rcm:

a) Discount on total cart value or quantity (e.g., Spend $75 get 10% off, spend $150 get 20% off - or Buy 3 items get 10% off, Buy 5 get 15% off)

b) Volume Discount on product quantity (e.g., Buy 2 of the same item get 10% off, Buy 4 get 20% off)

c) Make the cheapest item free/discounted (e.g., Buy 2, get the 3rd cheapest item free)

:light_bulb: Apps like BOGOS: Free Gift Bundle Upsell (free plan available) let you set up all these discounts with flexible conditions.

You can also narrow the discount down to or exclude pecific products, collections, vendors, or product types → so your excluded items (dog treats, dropshipping lines,…) stay completely out of the promotion.

Hope my suggestions help with your sale. Good luck!
