Stores with huge # of items..how?

Im considering opening a store that could easily have 500k items in it.

As im finding out in the test store im working with, this can take a paaaaaaainfully loooooong time to even manage 25k items.

Maybe 1/3 have photos, but the rest will have a placeholder saying that the Manufacturer has no photo available…

Any workarounds, hints, 3rd party solutions???

Hi, @gemohler

Thanks for posting to the Shopify Community!

Can you tell us a bit more about the store you plan to open? For example, the types of products and why such a large amount of inventory?

The reason I ask, is Shopify has certain limitations when it comes to importing more than 50,000 variants. Once a store reaches the 50,000 variant limit you are then restricted to 1000 new variants a day moving forward. Please note, exceptions can be made, however in very limited cases.

Thanks in advance! I’m looking forward to hearing more about your business idea.

OW Single Manufacturer auto parts, and these are all unique part numbers.

1/2 may be ‘discontinued’, but those change quickly qtr to qtr.

But..now I know I have an even larger problem, TY

Hi, @gemohler

Thanks for providing that information. You’d be pleased to know that this type of business strategy qualifies to be considered to have the limit removed.

Lets circle back on the performance question.

Can I still expect..I think I read somewhere, up to a second per imported item if it has an image link?

What if 2/3 of these share the SAME image link? Do 300k of these have to load each image link individually?

Hi, @gemohler

Unfortunately, I can’t provide a specific time in which it takes to upload if you’re using a CSV.

However, in regards to images; your products can absolutely share the same image. Additionally, to import via CSV an image isn’t required. There are however, certain values that are required when importing. You can learn more here.

Yes, item complexity matters, but Im reading that inserting a photo link, is perhaps the most painful part of parts import.

.csv would be the only way to possible manage such a large inventory of unique handles without direct access to the backend DB, such as I can with zencart, for example.

Each handle would initially have an image URL, even if 3/4 of them share the same image.
