"Submit as drafts for review" Feature Seems to be Useless

We are trying to use Shopify for B2B. For accounts that have payment terms, we allow orders to go into our fulfillment process before they are fully paid. For accounts that do not have terms, we expect full payment before orders are fulfilled.

I thought that setting these accounts to “Submit as drafts for review” would be our solution for this. However, there are several reasons why this isn’t going to work, and I cannot at this point believe there is a functional use for this setting.

  1. When this setting is enabled, customers still select their payment method at checkout. They are able to enter a card at checkout, or select a manual payment method such as check.

  2. The payment method selected at checkout or card entered is not displayed anywhere on the draft order and is not linked to the order.

  3. Even if the customer saved the card entered to their vault, there would be no way for a staff member to know if that’s what the customer intended to use for payment for the order (the customer could have selected check even if they have a card vaulted).

  4. Because of this, an invoice would need to be sent to the customer to collect payment (we could not process a payment from a card even if they entered one because we wouldn’t know that’s what they wanted to pay with this order). This renders the customer having entered a payment method or card at checkout completely useless.

  5. When clicking the link to pay an invoice, the customer can again select a manual payment method. Even if the check hasn’t been received, the order will automatically switch to a live order from draft no matter what payment type is indicated.

  6. Because of this, the only way to prevent an order from going live unpaid would be to only accept up-front credit card payments. And this defeats the point of submitting orders as drafts completely useless.

Can someone from Shopify please help us with this scenario? Or another merchant encountering this let me know a workaround? I cannot imagine that there is a single merchant that is using the “submit as drafts for review” successfully.
