There needs to be new security features for payments with payment options where account holders can opt for pay by bank instead of pay by card. We rarely ever have chargebacks, but as of 2026 we are covered in fraudulent chargebacks with buyer not even having to return goods and banks approve the chargebacks, giving them free goods plus money back! This is completely unsustainable.
Media reports that chargeback fraud has surged by 40% in 2026. Is Shopify doing anything about this issue?? We need other payment options.
A sudden cluster of chargebacks where the buyer keeps the goods and the bank still sides with them usually means card-not-present fraud with stolen cards, and unfortunately CNP liability falls on the merchant, which is why the banks approve them. The pay-by-bank idea is reasonable as a wish, but the practical defense is cutting the fraudulent orders off before they ship.
What tends to actually reduce this:
Turn on 3D Secure where available, it shifts liability for many CNP transactions to the issuer, which directly addresses your scenario.
Manual payment capture plus verifying high-risk orders before fulfilling (matching ID to card, contacting the buyer). Unverifiable high-risk orders are safer cancelled than shipped.
Look at whether the fraud orders share signals, country, BIN, proxy/VPN use, billing/shipping mismatch. If there’s a pattern, a rules/fraud app can auto-flag or block it (Blockify can block by IP/country/VPN and auto-cancel high-risk orders; Shopify’s own Fraud Filter can write flag/cancel rules for free).
If you ship internationally and the fraud is concentrated abroad, requiring 3DS and tightening verification on those orders usually helps more than any single app.
