The transaction fee on top of the subscription is the one that bites most at SM volume, since it scales with returns exactly when margins are already thin. A few things I’d filter on before committing: flat monthly with no per-return fee, a self-serve returns portal so you’re not manually approving each one, and whether it writes back to Shopify inventory automatically (some only generate the label and leave you to restock by hand). Loop and Rich Returns are the names that come up most but they lean pricey at small volume. One more trick, sort the negative reviews by date rather than reading the lifetime average, because bad support tends to show up heavily in the last 6 months when an app gets stretched. What return volume are you handling monthly? That decides whether a per-return pricing model ever beats a flat one for you.
At small-store volume, I would separate two decisions before choosing an app:
If the first is enough, test Shopify’s native return tools before paying for another app. If the second is the pain point, I would compare apps on four things: per-return fees, whether the customer can explicitly request an exchange, how return labels are handled, and whether you can export the request history.
Disclosure: I built Opus Returns & Exchanges specifically for the smaller-store case described here. It has a customer portal and merchant request queue, with no subscription or per-return fee. Every current feature is free. It does not pretend to be an enterprise carrier or warehouse platform, and it currently has zero reviews, so I would recommend testing it with a development or test order before using it live.
If you share the approximate number of returns per month and whether labels are required, I can give a more honest answer about whether Opus, native Shopify, or a larger app is the better fit.
