Support for the visually impared

A friend and I sell on this platform, and were recently told we had to make changes to support the visually impaired. How does one go about doing so?

Was it just a suggestion or some audit was done?

This is your theme responsibility. If your theme is recent and not heavily modified, then it should be ok – most recent themes are done with this in mind.

Hi @PaulyWalnuts

Welcome to Shopify Community!

We are working on EAA Compatibility for the exact same reason.

& based on our experience, I can say these things.

The Accessibility is categorized on four different issue -

  • Color Contrast
    • Make sure your contrast ratio of your elements and sub elements are less than the standard ratio 4.5:1
  • Screen Reader
    • Basically, this feature is focused on making sure when the users ( visually impaired) visits the content of the website, then the screen reader should tell the users that whether this is a text/link and the state (like Add to cart button, Username text field etc)
  • Keyboard
    • Make sure that the important contents on the website are accessible via keyboard ( tab, arrow keys)
  • Browser Zoom
    • Make sure that the website works great even on 200% - 400% zoom.

These are some important stuffs that you need to take care of for Accessibility.

Most new themes are already built taking these features on mind. But if you have custom theme, that you’ll need to validate if you have these features implemented.

I hope I was clear on this.

Thank you,

Sajat
