Taxes not charging

I currently have 5 physical products to pre-order for a Convention we put on every year. These physical products are for pick-up only.

How do I get Shopify to charge taxes on these products when customers purchase online, to pick up at the convention?

I have tried adding that it is a physical product, that charges taxes, but gives the customers the option to have it shipped.

Yes.

We have a convention in November every year at the same location, and people order pre-registration items to pick up at the convention. Tax requirements are based in San Diego, CA, where the convention is based. Shopify all of a sudden stopped charging tax and this is frustrating.

Im just going to remove shipping options and add the tax into the product. This is so frustrating. I wish they would go back to how it used to be.

Hello @gena88

You can absolutely have those pre-order-only items pick up at the convention and still collect tax—just use Shopify’s Custom Shipping Profiles + Local Pickup:

1. Create a dedicated Shipping Profile

  • Go to Settings → Shipping & delivery and click Create new profile.
  • Name it “Convention Pre-orders” (or similar) and add your 5 pre-order products to it.

2. Remove all shipping rates

  • In that profile’s Shipping to zones, delete any rates you see—this prevents “Ship” from ever showing up for those items.

3. Enable Local Pickup

  • In that same profile, under Local pickup, click Manage, enable pickup for your convention location, and save.
  • Now at checkout, shoppers only get the “Pick up at [Convention Name]” option—no shipping.

4. Make sure those products are taxable

  • On each pre-order product page in Admin, check Charge taxes on this product.
  • Under Settings → Taxes and duties, ensure you’re charging your local sales tax for that pickup location.

With this setup, Shopify will:

  • Restrict checkout to “Pick up” only for those 5 products.
  • Automatically apply the correct regional tax based on your pickup address.

That way customers can’t choose shipping, and you still collect tax when they place their pre-order.
