how can I add a text area as a product option? so users can enter the names of the 12 colors they want simply by looking at the images that lists all the colors?

Yes, you can text area product option by using an application such as, Variant Option, Product Options & Customizer, and King Product Options & Variant. These applications have the text product options. Instead of using a Text field for customers to write the name of each selected color, you should consider displaying available Color options (using Image Swatch or Color Swatch option type) for them to choose from, which is much more convenient and intuitive.
