The best POS set-up for a consignment clothing store?

Topic summary

Consignment clothing retailer seeks to migrate to Shopify for both an online store and in‑person POS (point of sale), asking for the best hardware setup for cash and credit plus clear costs (one‑off, monthly, per‑transaction).

Shopify support confirms the dual setup and provides official resources: getting started/FAQ with trial signup, online store pricing, POS pricing and feature breakdown, and the Shopify hardware store.

Key cost notes: the Basic online plan is usually sufficient to start. If eligible and using Shopify Payments, the 2% transaction fee is waived; only credit card processing rates apply. POS features marked “Pro” require a POS Pro plan/location.

What’s provided vs. missing: links to pricing, features, and hardware are central; no specific hardware recommendations (e.g., cash drawer, card reader, receipt printer) or exact fee figures were given. Consignment-specific workflows weren’t addressed.

Status and next steps: no final decision yet. Suggested actions are to review the linked pages, choose an online plan, select the appropriate POS plan (Standard vs. Pro), and then purchase compatible hardware. Discussion remains open.

Hi, I have a consignment clothing store and I would like to move to Shopify. We are a small retailer (only one cash) and are planning to start selling items online (we have never done this before). I’m trying to understand what hardware is the best set-up for me. Everything is quite manual right now and my equipment is it out of date. Any advice / suggestions greatly appreciated!

Hey, @JimEG1231

Happy to help. Before I offer up some resources and advice, I’d just like to learn a bit more about exactly what you’re looking to accomplish.

Just to confirm, you are looking to use Shopify for both online sales (an online store) AND convert your existing in-person point-of-sale system to Shopify’s point of sale?

If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.

Yes, I am interested in using Shopify for both online sales and online store, and I need to update the POS and am considering Shopify. I’m trying to figure out the the right mix of hardware (I do cash and credit) and software, along with costs (one-off, monthly, and per transaction). Any information is very appreciated!

Got it. Sounds good.

For getting started with Shopify, and getting the online store setup: you can visit our FAQ page. From that page in the top right corner, you can also get started with your trial.

As far as pricing goes for the online store, you can then check out our pricing page to see a breakdown of each plan along with all the associated costs and fees. Typically the basic plan is suitable for most users getting started out. The added bonus is that if you are eligible and setup the store to take payments with Shopify Payments gateway, the 2% transaction fee is waived. You would only pay the credit card rate fees.

From there, we have the point of sale system. Pricing and fees can be found here. There are a variety of different plans that are suited based on your needs. You can see a breakdown of all the features available with our POS here. The ones marked as “Pro” are features exclusive to any of the plans that mention a ‘POS Pro’ location.

Once you get setup with the POS plan that fits your needs, you can also begin looking at our hardware store to shop for the hardware that you will need to run your business.

I hope this helps! If there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know.
