After the recent update, the Product Type and Tags fields were changed from simple text input to a dropdown selection.
Before, we could type or paste values directly, which made managing products fast and efficient. Now we have to select items one by one from a list, and that takes much longer — especially when working with large catalogs.
For stores with hundreds or thousands of products, tags are part of daily workflow. We use them for collections, search, filtering, and general organization. The new interface makes routine tasks noticeably slower.
It would be really helpful if Shopify could either:
Bring back the text input option, or
Allow both typing/pasting and dropdown selection
That flexibility would make a big difference for merchants who manage large numbers of products every day.
One practical workaround is to bypass the dropdown via bulk tools in Shopify. For large catalogs, the bulk editor and the CSV import/export remain the fastest ways to mass update product tags and types. Export products, edit tags in a spreadsheet then import to update thousands of products. Matrixify, and others, allow for scheduled bulk edits, and a more flexible tag management, without play like you have to do with manual clicking. Yes, this allows the high volume workflows to run fast and keep the data consistent, and it also drastically reduces the time spent on repetitive admin work on the average, if not more so, especially for rapidly growing stores.
