Theme - warehouse search bar change to magnify glass icon

I would like to remove the large search bar on the theme warehouse which I can do with the CSS code

.search-bar__top-wrapper {
display: none;
}

but then I would like to have a magnify glass icon that if clicked would then bring up the search bar? Can anyone help with this. I can see quite a few people unhappy with the size of the search bar but no-one yet with a resolved discussion replacing it with the magnify glass icon like so many of the other themes.
