There was a problem verifying and claiming your domain - Google Merchant Center account

Topic summary

Domain verification/claim in Google Merchant Center via Shopify is failing with the error “There was a problem verifying and claiming your domain.” Users seek ways to complete verification and reconnect their Shopify-Google integration.

Suggested fixes:

  • Retry verification using the HTML meta tag method and add it to the theme.liquid file (Shopify theme file). Follow Google’s official steps via the provided support link.
  • Disconnect the Google Merchant Center app from Shopify, then reconnect it. Another guide link was shared to walk through Shopify domain verification.

Ongoing issues:

  • One user reports the site is verified and claimed in Google Merchant Center, but Shopify still won’t connect. Support previously fixed it by manually connecting, but after disconnecting, reconnection fails despite ~10 support attempts.

Most recent update:

  • The free Shopify Shopping app is reportedly being migrated from Shopify to Google, which may limit support and cause connection issues. Recommendation: continue contacting Shopify support for reconnection.

Status:

  • No confirmed resolution. Actions involve retrying HTML meta tag verification and reconnecting the app; support escalation may be needed.

Key terms:

  • HTML meta tag: a verification code placed in the site’s head.
  • theme.liquid: main Shopify theme file where meta tags can be added.

Hi,

Can anyone help me I have been trying to set up a Google Merchant account and the error message is “There was a problem verifying and claiming your domain” does anyone know what that means?

Simply try again, and use HTML tag. This will always work. And install it in the theme.

Emmanuel,

How do I get in touch with you?

Click on my domain name under my name on the left, then go to the contact page.

Thank you for your interest.

I’m having the same issue. It seems the only was to correct it is to disconnect the app from shopify and then reconnect it. Does that sound correct?

You can verify and claim by following the steps: https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/176793?hl=en-GB

I recommend using the HTML meta tag option, and simply add it to your theme.liqued file.

Go through the following steps:

then on your shopify account Disconnect your Google Merchant Center, then connect again.

I have the connecting issue when verifying the site claim since I started my Shopify account. The site is verified and claimed in Google Merchant and I’m also an Admin there, however it still never connects. The first time I contacted support they somehow opened a ticket and they were able to connect it.

I had to disconnect it for some reason a week ago and I can’t connect it again, and this time i’m being able to find someone from support able to manually connect it from their side (sigh), and i have tried around 10 times contacting support.

@jcarriba If you are using the free shopping app, built by Shopify, then this app is in the process of being migrated from Shopify to Google. So it’s possible that support can not help because they are in the middle of migration.

However, I recommend you continue to contact Shopify support to help you re-connect.
