This store can’t accept real orders or real payments

“This store can’t accept real orders or real payments.” pops when I tried to check out.
I have already subscribed to the Shopify plan, the payment test mode is off, and the password is disabled.
How to solve it?

Hi there @KKK6

I understand you are seeing an error in the checkout which says “This store can’t accept real orders or real payments.” I can see how that would be confusing!

The first thing I would usually recommend here, is to check that your payment gateway is not on test mode. However, you mentioned that test mode was off so that may not be the issue here. What payment gateways do you currently have active on your store?

You mentioned that you have an active Shopify Subscription which is good (this is required to activate the checkout). You also removed the password page which means customers can now access your store.

Are you a Shopify Partner, and is this a development store? If so, then store ownership would first need to be transferred to the client. This is because development stores have limitations on them to make sure that they are used only for development. More information on transferring stores can be found here.

If you are a Shopify Partner and you have switched a development store to a paid plan and retained ownership, then you will need to contact Partner support to remove the commission on the store. It is not possible to earn commission on your own development stores. Learn more about switching a development store to a paid plan without transferring ownership here.

If you are not a Shopify Partner but you purchased this store, or had a Partner develop the store for you, then it is possible that the store ownership was never transferred. You will need to contact the Partner who is responsible for the store and ask them to transfer it to you. Looking forward to hearing back about your situation!

Hi @FlickZ932

Thanks for reaching out on this thread to let us know, and welcome to the Shopify Community.

I understand that you are also seeing an error in your checkout, is that right? I’d be happy to help you troubleshoot this here. Is it the same error of 'This store can’t accept real orders or real payments’ that @KKK6 has experienced?

Thanks for confirming that you read through my previous reply. Can you confirm if you are a Shopify Partner, or are you a regular merchant that created a store and are seeing this issue?

If this is a development store then it will not be able to accept real orders until it is transferred to a merchant or switched to a paid plan. Likewise, a regular store will not be able to accept payments until it is on a paid plan - you cannot accept orders/payments on a free trial for example.

Any extra information you can provide about your situation and when this issue is occurring will be very helpful for troubleshooting this. Also, screenshots can often be useful so feel free to share those if you are comfortable doing so.

Looking forward to your response!

Hello, a client of mine is also experiencing this issue. I couldn’t reproduce it so far, can you maybe just tell me, if this message appears, will it appear directly after going from “Shipping” to “Payment”? Will it depend on the country set up for shipment? In other word, is there a reliable way to test whether this message can, under any circumstances, appear to a customer?

Hi @fweth

Thanks for reaching out to let me know!

I understand one of your clients is noticing this same error in checkout, and you are hoping to get some clarification on when this error occurs.

Have you noticed that this is happening on all orders, or only for specific customers or regions?

Based on your profile it appears you are a Shopify Partner - is this a development store that had ownership transferred over to your client? Have you confirmed that the store is on an active paid plan (not a trial), has valid payment methods added and has appropriate shipping rates setup?

Usually the 'This store can’t accept real orders or real payments’ error would only show if the store was unable to accept orders at all, and it wouldn’t be specific to a country. If there were issues with a specific country, you would expect to see a message such as ‘This Order Can’t Be Shipped To Your Location. Contact The Store For More Information’, which would usually mean there are no shipping rates set up for that region.

Any extra information or screenshots you can provide about the specific error your client is seeing will be very helpful for troubleshooting this error with you. I look forward to hearing back from you!

Hello, thanks a lot for replying! No, this is not my own store, and my information about this is quite limited. I just heard that it happened and then tried to reproduce it, but didn’t manage. So from how I understand your answer, if I can’t reproduce it (by placing some random order and then following the process up to the payment step, but not actually entering payment information), it is already resolved. (Maybe the client accidentally activated the payment test mode and deactivated it again or something.) I just wanted to make sure that if I don’t see the error, then nobody sees the error.

Hi @fweth

I understand what you mean, thanks for clarifying!

If you cannot replicate the error, and neither can your client then it may very well be resolved. It might have been something such as test mode being accidentally turned on for the payment gateway at the same time an order came in which caused it to fail etc.

With that said, it is important to be vigilant and keep an eye on issues like this. I would recommend explaining to your client that recording information on the error is very important. For example, if a customer reports an issue like this then asking them for screenshots and details of the order would be very beneficial when trying to replicate the issue and resolve it.

For now it sounds like all is OK, but definitely do keep an eye on it and feel free to report back here or contact Shopify Support through the Help Center if it happens again!

Hi, I read your explanations and checked that everything was ok in my store, but i still have the same issue when my clients want to purchase some product.

Hi @RitaMelo

Thanks for reaching out here and for providing the screenshot of your checkout! Welcome to the Shopify Community.

I understand you’re seeing the same error, and have already read through my above replies but still haven’t been able to resolve this - thanks for confirming.

Here on the Shopify Community we are unable to access any account specific information, so I can’t take a closer look at your store to see what might be causing this. However, if you reach out to our support team using this link here, one of our advisors would be more than happy to troubleshoot this further with you.

Hi Rick, we are also experiencing this issue, we have had several orders overnight that have processed, but two previous customers have been in touch to say they are receiving the message ‘

This store cant accept real orders or real payments

on checkout.

I have asked them if they are using a specific payment method and one was using card, another PayPal.

any advice?

Hi @Nathan_Long

Thanks for explaining what is happening on your store.

I understand why you would want to get to the bottom of this, especially if it is preventing some customers from checking out.

Have you already read through my previous replies which outline more information on when this error can occur, but still cannot solve this issue on your own store? From what you have described it sounds like the issue is sporadic and not happening all the time, is that right?

You can view more information on the failed orders by navigating to the Orders > Abandoned checkouts section of your admin. There, you can find and click into the failed orders and view more information in the History section, including payment information. It might help to shed some light on what is happening by providing error codes etc. We have more information about abandoned checkouts here.

What payment gateway are you using to process credit cards? Shopify Payments, or perhaps a different third party gateway?

You also mentioned that one of the gateways was PayPal - have you confirmed that the PayPal integration is set up and working OK? You can check this in the Settings > Payments section of your admin, but it would also be a good idea to login to your PayPal account and make sure all looks OK there.

Looking forward to hearing back with your findings.

Hi Rick,

I have read through all your suggestions but nothing seems to help.

Everything in our store is set up (Shopify payments, bank details etc.), the store is NOT in test mode or development mode (we have been paying Shopify subscriptions regularly and I unclicked the box to put in test mode).

However I am STILL getting this message at checkout:
“This store can’t accept real orders or real payments”
“This store can’t accept payments right now”

Any other ideas?

Hi @if12192

Thanks for reaching out here, and for confirming the specific error messages you are seeing in the checkout.

I understand that Shopify Payments is set up on the store, and that the store is not in test mode. You have also confirmed that it is not a development store and has been on an active plan for some time now.

As you have explained that you have already read through my previous posts, and have been unable to diagnose the cause of this issue - I would recommend reaching out to our support team so we can take a closer look at your checkout issues. It is possible that we may need to gather some more information and spend some time looking into this, however one of our support advisors will let you know if that is the case.

You can contact our team via the help center using this link here.

Hi I also have this issue I am making my own store and everything is like you said in the above replies is there any other thing that could be making this?

We had this and fixed it by going into the credit card payment portal, there were some notifications that needed action

Hi @Theairpoddude

Welcome to the Shopify Community.

Thanks for reaching out to confirm you are also experiencing this same issue with your checkout.

It sounds like you have read through all of the previous posts here, and are still unable to resolve this, is that correct? Here is a summary of the aforementioned potential fixes for this error:

  • Check that your payment gateway is not in test mode.
  • Ensure that you have a valid payment gateway set up on the store. As @Nathan_Long mentioned you should also double check the actual payment gateway account to ensure that there are no issues or notifications that need action.
  • Make sure your store is on an active Shopify Subscription and not still on the free trial (this is required to activate the checkout).
  • If you are a Shopify Partner, double check that it isn’t a development store (development stores have limitations on them to make sure that they are used for development purposes only).
  • Make sure the store wasn’t a development store in which the Partner retained ownership after transfer (it’s not possible for Partners to earn commission on their own development stores).

If you have confirmed all of the above suggestions, and are still unable to fix this issue then you should proceed to contact our support team using this link here. One of our support advisors will be happy to take a closer look and try to help you identify possible causes for this issue.

Hello. I have the same problem. How can I check the actual payment gateway account to make sure there are no issues or notifications requiring action?

Hi there @Sergio-64

Thanks for joining into the conversation and for letting me know you are experiencing the same problem. My previous post above is a summary of everything we have discussed here so far, so I would advise having a read through that and then reaching out to our support team if that doesn’t help you resolve this checkout issue.

You asked about checking the payment gateway account - can you confirm what payment gateway you are using on your store?

If you are using Shopify Payments, then you can navigate to the Settings > Payments section of your admin, and click the Manage button next to Shopify Payments. If there are issues with the setup, or if test mode is turned on then it should let you know here. You can also check the homepage of your admin for banners or error messages relating to Shopify Payments. If you cannot see any issues there, and are unable to resolve this checkout issue then please do contact our support team using this link here and we can take a closer look.

If you are using a third-party payment gateway, then you would need to navigate to their website, and login to your account. As @Nathan_Long mentioned, you might spot issues there that need fixing. You can also feel free to contact the support team of the payment gateway in question, and they may be able to help you diagnose potential issues with the account and/or Shopify integration.

Similarly to the Shopify Payments setup instructions I mentioned above, you can also navigate to Settings > Payments and locate the section where the third-party gateway is added. There, you might see errors with the setup such as incorrect login credentials etc. We have more information on third-party payment gateways here.
