Title: Feature Request – Barcode Mismatch Alert Sound for Shopify POS

Hi Shopify Community,

I’m a small grocery store owner using Shopify for both my online store and in-person sales via Shopify POS. I love the integration between the two, but I’d like to raise a feature gap that I think many retail merchants — especially those in grocery and supermarket settings — would benefit from.

The Issue: No Barcode Mismatch Alert in Shopify POS

In virtually every traditional supermarket POS system, when a cashier scans a product and the barcode doesn’t match the expected item (e.g., wrong variant, unregistered barcode, or a product not in the system), the terminal plays an audible alert sound. This simple beep serves as an immediate signal to the cashier to double-check the item before completing the transaction.

Shopify POS currently has no such alert. If a barcode scan fails or doesn’t match a product, there is no sound notification — making it very easy for staff to miss the error during a busy checkout, potentially resulting in items being given away for free or incorrect products being rung up.

Why This Matters

  • :white_check_mark: Prevents checkout errors in high-volume retail environments

  • :white_check_mark: Reduces shrinkage and revenue loss

  • :white_check_mark: Improves staff efficiency — no need to visually monitor every scan

  • :white_check_mark: Standard feature in virtually all dedicated supermarket POS systems

Technical Simplicity

This is not a complex feature to implement. It simply requires playing a distinct error sound (different from the successful scan beep) when a barcode scan returns no result or a mismatch. Most modern devices — iOS and Android — natively support this kind of audio feedback with minimal development effort.

The Frustration: No Third-Party Workaround

What makes this particularly frustrating is that Shopify POS does not allow third-party app developers to hook into the barcode scanning event or the POS audio system. This means there is currently no way for merchants or developers to fill this gap through the App Store — we are entirely dependent on Shopify’s native development team to address it.

My Request

I sincerely hope the Shopify POS product team considers adding this feature. It is small in scope, technically straightforward, and would make a meaningful difference for grocery and supermarket merchants using Shopify POS in a real retail environment.

Has anyone else run into this issue? Would love to know if other merchants share this need — please upvote or comment if this affects your store too!
