Total inventory to equal the sum of all variants

I have a master item number with multiple SKU numbers. I need for the total inventory when viewing an item in the page view to be the sum of all the variants. Once the item is selected, the users can see the inventory broken down by SKU and select the SKU they want.

Is this possible? I’m currently trying to use variants for this, but it’s not working.
