Tracking Inventory for One Product with Multiple Variants for Quantity

Topic summary

Single inventory pool needed for a product whose variants represent quantity bundles (e.g., 1, 2, 36), with each purchase deducting the correct number of units from total stock (e.g., buy 2 → minus 2; buy 36 → minus 36).

Proposed solutions (third‑party apps):

  • Fusion Inventory: Define the item (“tape”) as a material and set a Bill of Materials (BOM) per variant to specify how many units it consumes (e.g., 2 or 36). After enabling inventory sync, the app keeps product and material inventories aligned. (BOM = a configuration listing components and their quantities used by a product variant.)
  • Easify Inventory Sync: Create bundle groups linking the base “1 unit” variant to the “2” and “36” variants. Set master/component and quantity per bundle so purchases of any variant decrement the base stock by the appropriate amount and recalculate available quantities for other variants.

Status: No resolution yet; OP has not confirmed an approach. Key next step is choosing and testing an app-based method.

Hello!

We are working on creating a shopify store and we are wondering something about the inventory management and keeping it accurate. We have products where we sell multiples of them for a discount, such as if you buy 1 tape it’s $2, 2 is $3.50, and 36 is $42.

Now I know I can portion these out and put a certain number of each for sale for each variant (1, 2, or 36), but what I would like to be able to do is put the full stock down in inventory and have each variant subtract the appropriate amount from inventory (e.g., Total stock is 400, one person buys 2, stock goes to 398, one person buys 36, stock goes to 362). Does anyone know how this would be possible?

Thank you!

Hi @illumino ,

We recently released Fusion Inventory which can help with this. In the app you just need to add “tape” as a material. You can then configure a Bill of Materials for each product variant which will define how much tape is used by the product variant. For example, Variant A can use 2 pieces of tape while Variant B uses 36 pieces.

Once you configure the materials and bill of materials in the app, you just need to activate inventory sync. After that the app will take care of keeping your product and material inventory in sync.

Feel free to shoot me an email if you have any questions.

Hi @illumino ,

You can easily solve your inventory management issue with the Easify Inventory Sync app  . The app lets you connect and sync inventory between your base product (1 tape) reflecting the total inventory and other variants (“2” and “36”). Here’s how you can set it up:

  1. Create Bundle Groups:

    • Group 1: Connect the base product (1 tape) with the “2” variant.
    • Group 2: Connect the base product (1 tape) with the “36” variant.

For example, in the bundle group of 1 tape with the “2” variant:

    • Master product: “2” variant
    • Component product: “1” variant, with a quantity per bundle set to 2
  2. How It Works:

    • The quantity of the “2” variant will be automatically calculated based on the quantity of the “1” base product. For instance, if you have 100 tapes available, the quantity of the “2” variant will be 50.
    • When the “1” variant is purchased, the new quantity will recalculate the available quantity for the “2” variant.
    • Similarly, when the “2” variant is purchased, the quantity of the “1” base product will decrease by 2, and the app will recalculate the quantity of the “2” variant.

You can set up the same process for the bundle group of “1” and “36”.

Your case is similar to the Multivitamin scenario, which is detailed in a demo with a comprehensive step-by-step guide provided by the app. I hope you give the app a try!
