I had a very frustrating experience with support where the said the following is possible, just to later retract.
We purchased a theme on our old store that is no longer in use, but the old store will remain active. We’d like to transfer this digital asset we purchased to our new store without closing the old store. The developer let us know they don’t object to this, but shopify makes it impossible to do so, as they handle the license and subsequent transfer.
The support agent specifically said I could purchase the theme on the new store, remove it from the old one, and request a refund. When pushed if she was sure of this answer, she posted the help article which completely contradicts here answer (old store must be closed).
My question: Shopify, why isn’t it possible to transfer the asset we paid for to a new store?
Theme licenses on Shopify are issued per store not per account. Even if the developer allows it, Shopify manages the licensing system, and officially a paid theme can only be transferred if the original store is closed.
That’s why support mentioned the refund route but per Shopify policy, refunds for theme transfers generally require the old store to be shut down.
If the old store must remain active, the only compliant option is usually purchasing a new license for the new store.
You could try escalating politely to Shopify Support again and reference the conflicting guidance you received, but licensing rules are typically enforced strictly.
Well, in short this is not possible to use the Paid theme for another account. Because in Shopify the license works for one store only at one time. If you try to use it for another store then Shopify will restrict your account. Because you are violating the policies of shopify.
So, in short you need to purchase another theme to ensure there should be no issue in the future.
