This tutorial details how to troubleshoot issues that may be caused by HTML in the Rich Text Editor. The Rich Text Editor (RTE) is used for writing product descriptions, collection descriptions, pages, blog posts, and policies. Some RTE content may have additional HTML codes that can trigger errors and/or styling issues on your website. This can occur when you copy and paste content from another website or from a program such as Microsoft Word as formatting can often be copied along with the text. Running the content through an HTML stripper such as Strip HTML before adding it to your store will prevent this from happening. If you notice an issue with your website, primarily in the formatting within the body text on any of your pages, and have not made any code changes to your theme, or added any new apps, we highly recommend checking your RTE contents.
Some examples of these issues are:
- Text or images are not aligning properly.
- Double variant selectors on product pages.
- Font style or color not matching the rest of the site.
- Headings, lists, and paragraphs not formatting correctly.
- General formatting issues.
- Images not loading/broken image links.
- Unresponsive buttons or links
If you click on **‘<>’**or ‘Show HTML’, and you see some additional HTML code, you will want to reset it.
To reset the HTML content, follow these steps:
- In the RTE, copy the entire content. You’ll want to make sure you are copying the content in the editor, not the HTML code.
-
Paste this content on a plain text editor. This can be a Word Document, Notes, Google Document, etc.
-
Copy the content again, this time from the plain text editor.
-
Return to your Shopify RTE, and replace your current RTE content with the text you just copied from the plain text editor.
-
Click Save.
These steps will resolve any issues that have been caused by HTML from within the RTE. If your issues persist after following these steps I would recommend first clearing your cache and checking again. If the issue is not resolved after clearing the cache we would recommend that you reach out to our Support team directly if you are using a Shopify supported theme or to the developer of your third-party theme. To find your theme developer’s contact information go to Online Store > Themes > Current Theme > Customize. Click the Theme settings tab and then select Support or Read Documentation.
