Unable to see Homepage Title or Meta on 'Preferences' Page

Topic summary

A store owner cannot locate the homepage title and meta description fields on Shopify’s Preferences page under Online Store. Instead, they only see the ‘Social Sharing Image & SEO’ section.

Root Cause:
Shopify has changed the layout. The visible section in the screenshot actually is where homepage title and meta description are managed, though the interface may look different than expected.

Additional Considerations:

  • Newer Shopify themes (especially Online Store 2.0) may handle SEO settings through the theme editor or customizer rather than the traditional Preferences page
  • Some themes auto-generate homepage metadata, which can affect how fields display
  • Browser cache or permission issues could also impact visibility

Follow-up Issue:
The user reports Google is indexing the homepage title but not the meta description across two stores (one new, one established). This is likely due to Google’s indexing timeline—it takes time for search engines to crawl and reflect updated metadata after changes are made in the store.

When I click on ‘Preferences’ under ‘Online Store’, I don’t see any option to update the ‘Title and meta description’.

The first thing I see is the ‘Social Sharing Image & SEO’

I am the store owner, so should have all permissions.

Please help?

Shopify changed the layout, but the option you mentioned in the images is for the Title and meta description of the homepage.

There are a few reasons why you might not see the Homepage Title or Meta section on the Preferences page:

  1. Theme or Platform Updates:
Some newer Shopify themes or Online Store 2.0 updates may handle SEO settings differently. In these cases, the homepage SEO data might be managed through theme settings or the theme editor instead of the traditional Preferences page.

  2. Missing or Overridden Settings:
If your theme automatically generates a homepage title or meta description (or uses default values), the fields on the Preferences page might not display any custom values—even though they’re still used on your live site.

  3. User Permissions or Caching Issues:
Make sure you’re logged in with sufficient permissions to view and edit these settings. Additionally, clearing your browser cache or trying a different browser may resolve display issues.

Next Steps to Troubleshoot:

  • Check Theme Documentation:
Review your theme’s documentation to see if it specifies a different method for managing homepage SEO settings. Some themes include these settings in the theme editor rather than under Online Store > Preferences.

  • Review Online Store 2.0 Settings:
If you’re using an Online Store 2.0 theme, look in the theme customizer (Online Store > Themes > Customize) for any SEO settings related to the homepage.

  • Contact Shopify Support:
If you’ve confirmed that your theme should display these options and they’re still missing, contacting Shopify support may help identify if it’s a bug or a change in the platform.

Following these steps should help you identify why the homepage title and meta fields aren’t appearing and how to set them correctly for your store.

Thank you so much for this.

I’ve noticed that Google pulls through that title but not the meta description. The same things is happen for 2 stores I manage - one is a new store, one is an existing one with significant traffic.

Any idea why and how I can ensure it’s pulled through the Google?

It would take time for google index your description after updating information in your store.
