Understanding what is possible in Shopify 2.0

Excited about what is possible with Shopify 2.0! Seems like a great step in the right direction.

I am trying to understand how Blocks and Sections work, particularly about Blogposts. I’d like to use as many native functions as possible, and not have to use plugins, however if required that is fine.

I’d like to edit the Blogpost template and add in custom fields. When editing a blog post, we by default only have a WYSIWYG editor. We would like to add a 2nd WYSIWYG editor in here, and place it in a block. This content in the 2nd WYSIWYG is unique to each blog post.

When I look at the customise area, and select Blog Post as the template, I can place sections & blocks, but it seems I should also put my content in there as well. This means that I cannot add unique data for each blog post.

Am i able to create an Empty block, and then edit a blogpost and input the data into it? Or does using a plugin that lets you add custom fields, the only solution?

Thanks in advance!

Andrew

Currently, custom fields is the only way to accomplish this for blog articles.

Shopify is currently rolling out native metafield functionality, but has only done so with products and variants. Collections, customers, and orders are “Coming soon.” Unfortunately, no mention of blog metafields yet.

I created a custom blog CTA for a client using custom fields. Sounds similar to what you are requesting. It pulls the featured image from the blog as a background and they can add the text, button text, and url. It’s at the bottom of the post, right below the share buttons if you care to check it out.

Thank you very much, Khard, very helpful.
