I’m hoping to hear from other Shopify merchants who may have experienced something similar.
Before this incident, I had been a very happy Shopify customer and have generally had positive experiences with both the platform and support. That’s part of why this situation has been so frustrating. The issue itself was concerning, but what has been even more difficult is feeling like we’re still searching for answers about how it happened, what safeguards exist, and how to prevent it from occurring again.
I own a retail store next door to another Shopify merchant. We recently experienced a situation where a customer’s card transaction appeared to become associated with the neighboring merchant rather than the store where the customer was making a purchase.
Since then, we’ve spent considerable time on phone calls and email exchanges with Shopify. While Shopify has provided a technical explanation involving Bluetooth pairing and reader visibility, many of our concerns remain unanswered.
For example:
• Even after both merchants followed the steps to unpair and forget the devices through Shopify and the iPad Bluetooth settings, the neighboring merchant can still detect my card reader.
• We have not received clear guidance on what merchants can do to prevent a similar incident from occurring again.
• We have asked what safeguards exist for merchants operating in close proximity to one another (neighboring stores, malls, trade shows, farmers markets, etc.), but have not received clear answers.
• We have asked how merchants should reassure customers in situations like this and what protections are in place to prevent unintended reader interactions.
• Despite multiple calls and emails, we still do not have a clear understanding of what specifically prevents this situation from happening again.
When we requested escalation to a supervisor or manager because of our concerns regarding payment security and merchant safeguards, we were directed to post here in the Community Forum.
I’m genuinely interested in hearing from other merchants:
- Have you ever had another Shopify merchant’s reader appear on your devices?
- Have you experienced unexpected reader pairing or transaction issues?
- Are there best practices for merchants operating in close proximity to one another?
- Has Shopify provided guidance on preventing situations like this from occurring?
I’m not looking to assign blame. I genuinely hope there is a simple explanation and resolution. I’m simply trying to understand how Shopify readers behave in real-world retail environments and what merchants can do to protect both their businesses and their customers.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
