Unfinished Themes Automatically Publishing

Topic summary

Unpublished theme duplicates appear to auto-publish and replace the live Shopify theme when the store is being updated. The store owner suspects a possible DNS issue and notes they must delete the duplicated theme to stop it appearing live.

One responder suggests the behavior is likely due to viewing the theme in preview mode rather than an actual auto-publish. Preview mode can make the draft theme appear at the main URL for that session.

The store owner counters that they tested on a different device by manually typing the store URL and still saw the draft theme replace the live site.

Suggested actions:

  • Close the preview bar/session (“Close preview”) to avoid the preview persisting.
  • Remember that Shopify creates a draft copy when updating themes and only publishes it if “Publish” is explicitly clicked.

Visual aids: Screenshots were provided showing the preview bar and the theme library’s publish workflow, central to understanding the suggestion.

Status: No confirmed resolution. Key question remains whether the issue is a stuck preview session or something else causing drafts to appear at the live URL.

We’re having an issue whereby unpublished themes are automatically publishing themselves. For example, when trying to update our store, the duplicated theme simply replaces the current one when viewed online before it’s ready. The only solution is to remove the duplicated theme.

Anyone have any ideas? Is this a DNS issue?

Hi @tailormade1

Maybe you are viewing preview link of unpublish store, not live store.

No, I’m manually typing in the URL of our store (on a different device), and it replaces the current site.

Please click Close preview button if it has because when updating a theme, it always creates a new draft copy theme in the theme library and publishes if you click Publish button only
