Hi Everyone,
I recently updated my theme and changed nothing else, and have literally not had a sale since. We did discover that google tags hadnt been activated on the new update so fixed that, but even though my traffic is UP significantly, and I used to get consistent ( but not huge) sales, now nothing. I have switched back to the old theme just to see if my sales pick up so then the theme developer can look at fixing whatever is wrong with the update. i can get customers to checkout, but then they dont convert. Help! it just feels like a switch had been turned off. Thanks so much. altasphere.com.au
Hi @learningquick
First off, great troubleshooting steps so far, switching back to the old theme is a smart move to identify if the issue lies with the new theme. Since traffic is up but conversions are down, it’s likely a user experience (UX) or technical issue.
Here are a few suggestions:
-
Check for broken elements: Ensure all buttons, links, and forms (especially on the checkout page) are working correctly in the new theme. Even small bugs can deter customers.
-
Mobile optimization: Test the new theme on mobile devices, as most shoppers browse on mobile. If the checkout process isn’t seamless, it could kill conversions.
-
Speed test: Run a speed test (using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights) to see if the new theme is slowing down your site. Slow load times can lead to cart abandonment.
-
Trust signals: Verify that trust badges, secure payment icons, and return policies are visible and intact in the new theme. Customers need reassurance at checkout.
Hi @learningquick
Since you’ve reverted to your old theme, we can use this as a test to see if sales recover. In the meantime, here are some things to check:
- Check for Checkout Errors
- Look at Analytics & Session Recording
- Theme Issues (if switching back fixes it, then the update was the problem)
- Google Tag Issue
Let me know if this helps, I can assist you further!
Since traffic is up but conversions dropped, it could be a UX issue. You need check for slow load times, broken buttons, or checkout errors. Also, review any changes in your product pages, trust signals, or navigation. Testing with your old theme was a smart move. If sales return, the developer should definitely investigate further.
