"Upload file type is invalid" error when syncing products with tiktok app

Topic summary

Merchants syncing Shopify products to TikTok Shop see mass rejections with the error “Upload file type is invalid.” The “view variants” action often does nothing. Several users report the setup was smooth until sync, suggesting items are not truly invalid but stuck in a disapproved state.

Most effective workarounds (confirmed by multiple users):

  • Edit any product field in Shopify (even add/remove a space or period) and Save. Status changes from Disapproved to Reviewing/Pending, then gets Approved within minutes. Do this in Shopify, not TikTok Seller Center.
  • Toggle publishing: in the Shopify product, uncheck TikTok in Publishing, Save; re-check TikTok, Save to re-trigger review.
  • Bulk approach: Shopify > Products > Inventory > Select all products > Bulk Edit (worked for some, not all).

Additional notes:

  • Manual listing in TikTok Seller Center works but isn’t scalable.
  • Duplicating a product (set original to Draft, new to Active) can push approval after ~12 hours; works best one at a time.
  • Issues persist for products with multiple variants; some methods fail there.

No official fix from Shopify/TikTok yet; thread remains open with workarounds only.

hello, I started setting up my Tiktok seller account and it looks like 41 products got rejected with the same error: Upload file type is invalid. The action on the right hand side says ‘view variants’ but then when i click on that nothing happens. please help! Any idea what this error means and how i can resolve it?

Good question, I couldn’t find much info on this issue. I was able to add the products that have this error manually into TikTok Seller Center and they are now active on TikTok. There has to be a better fix though, especially since you have 41 products with the error. Shopify support didn’t have a solution, but I reached out to TikTok- I’ll let you know if they provide a solution, or if I come across anything other fixes!

Came here to search for answers myself. Same happened to me for over 100+ products and was disapproved for same reason. Mostly everything as far as setup was smooth up until that point.

Gonna keep digging online to see what I can find. Such an ambiguous error because it never mentioned anything about that in the setup process. So that’s frustrating.

Good luck!

I’m having the same solution and I don’t want to pay for another 3rd party app to fix this.

Okay i just found a little hack, it seems the disapproved products are not really disapproved they’re just stuck. I tried editing some of the products (any edit works), click save, this will take the product to the ‘review’ state instead of ‘disapproved’ and will get approved a minute or two later. So far it’s working but I have to do it for all 40 products. Let me know if it works for you!

editing in shopify or sellers center? I have 400+ items to fix.

For everyone else searching for the answer to this - THIS WORKED. I feel for you if you have hundreds of listings but I was having the same issue and simply adding a space somewhere in my listing and saving it again moved it over to pending and then approved in just a couple minutes. Thanks Standawt

You’ll have to edit them in Shopify to get them approved and synced. I’m so sorry that you have so many products to do this to but making an edit and then saving it does fix this issue. Hopefully it doesn’t take you too long!

Confirming here that editing worked for me as well. Can’t say that it was just as simple as editing; but I did discover shortening my Product Titles to less than 70 Characters/10 Keywords did the trick.

The next thing I need to figure out is Printful Products with Google Free Ads. Your account gets suspended for Print-On-Demand personalized items apparently. So there is some sort of trick to getting them processed.

Re: SEO Product Titles - apparently Google is 70 character limit, Facebook/IG is around 150, and TikTok I couldn’t find there’s; but keeping them around 50-70 seems to be the sweet spot.

Great job and thanks for the reply! Hopefully this works for others.

For those of us that are a bit challenged - step by step detail is the best way to assist. I cannot see the “bulk update inventory”. Am I supposed ot go into the Tik Tok shop? Or in the main shopify page where I see all the products? STEP BY STEP helps please.

Hi!

In Shopify >> Products >> Inventory >> Select all products >> Bulk Edit

I tried this and it did not work. I think it may be because of the multiples variants for my products though. I dont see the option to add 2 variant option to tiktok shop when doing it manually - so just a thought for those of you who also have multiple variants. You may have to list them individually shivers at the thought of how much work this will take
