UPS & DHL International Labels - printing 1 LBS on the label regardless of actual weight

I am using managed markets for international sales and purchasing labels through Shopify. I noticed that UPS and DHL international labels are printing with a weight of 1 LBS regardless of the actual weight. I can see in my order timelines that the correct weight has been recorded, but not being reflected on the shipping labels.

Contacted support but they seem to have lack of knowledge about purchasing labels through Shopify and told me it was because my default package has a weight 1 lb. They didn’t know that this is just the weight of the empty box.

I’ve stopped shipping through Shopify for now because don’t want packages to get delayed or returned because of incorrect weight and inconsistency with customs forms.

Anyone else seeing this?

This is intended. See Shopify documentation about managed markets. It doesn’t make any sense to me why they’d want to display the incorrect weight on the label, but according to Shopify it’s intentional and shouldn’t have any negative impact.

  • Managed Markets shipping labels display a weight of 1 lb for all labels, to prompt shipping carriers to accurately weigh each package. This does not change the billing of Managed Markets labels. The weight declared by you or your logistics partner at the time of label creation is used for your initial label estimate, and is stored in the label barcode for the purpose of reconciling the label estimate with the carrier label invoice.
