We are a patisserie/cake shop. We unsuccessfully try to find an app that can perform the following upsell:
==> When a client buy a cake, a pop-up window would automatically suggest him/her to buy a chocolate plaque where the client write a message.
See below an example with a similar company that ours is proposing this service.
We looked at a few upsell app leaders who propose to upsell products linked with another one, but none of them allows the customer to write a message as part of the product : iCart Cart Drawer Cart Upsell, Upsell & Cross Sell - Selleasy, ReConvert Upsell & Cross-Sell, Bold Upsell

I am not sure if there is a upsell public app to achieve your needs. But I do have a idea to share with you if you can not do it with public app.
If the cart have a cake, we can add a attribute like below image in your cart. And The function is simple to achieve using cart attribute in shopify.

I’ve noticed that your competitor’s store isn’t using Shopify, so it’s not possible to replicate their exact setup. Additionally, there currently aren’t any upsell apps on Shopify that support personalized messages.
Instead, I recommend searching for “Gift wrap and message apps” on Shopify app store.
One app I highly recommend is LDT: Gift Wrap, Custom Option. Although it’s primarily designed for gifting, you can easily customize the title to fit your specific needs. This app allows you to create a message box and select add-on products, making it a great alternative for your store!

You can use the iCart Cart Drawer Cart Upsell app to create a pop-up upsell for a chocolate plaque when customers add a cake to their cart. While iCart doesn’t have a native text field, you can integrate a custom product options app (like Infinite Options) to add a message field for the plaque.
Alternatively, you can leverage the Order Note feature in iCart. Enable it and prompt customers to write their plaque message directly in the cart drawer. This creates a seamless upsell experience where customers can add their personalized message before checking out.
If you want to upsell a product with a personalized message, you will need some coding knowledge or assistance from the support team to customize the functionality.
