I’m reaching out on behalf of our charitable organization (in Canada), which relies heavily on our Shopify account to support our mission and serve our community. We are currently facing significant challenges that are severely impacting our operations, and we urgently need assistance from Shopify’s support team and the broader community.
Recently, our Shopify account received a verification alert that may lead to account suspension. Despite having gone through verification processes multiple times in the past, we are now encountering an overwhelming and seemingly arbitrary set of verification requirements. These demands are not only time-consuming but also raise serious concerns about the handling of sensitive information.
Shopify is requesting an extensive amount of documentation and personal information that feels excessive for a charitable organization. Specifically, they are asking for signed financial statements, T3010 forms that include highly sensitive personal details of all current and past board directors (such as residential addresses, possibly Social Insurance Numbers, and birthdates), detailed reports, and government registration documents. While some of these requirements are understandable, others are intrusive and unnecessary. To make matters worse, the online verification form even requests uploads of personal IDs and passports, adding another layer of complexity and privacy concerns.
We are also facing technical challenges with the document submission process. For example, the T3010 form is a 15-page PDF, but Shopify’s system only allows it to be uploaded as a single JPG file, making it technically impossible to comply with this request.
Additionally, our account holder is not listed in any government filings, meaning she cannot be verified. However, Shopify requires the account holder to be the equity owner, and she is our sole equity owner. This creates a frustrating situation that prevents us from resolving the issue.
Our attempts to reach Shopify’s support have been futile, as we are only met with automated chatbot responses and no access to human assistance. This lack of support is incredibly frustrating, especially for a small team dedicated to charitable work.
It seems that small business owners and charities like ours frequently encounter these issues, with many similar complaints surfacing on platforms like Reddit. It feels as though Shopify is intentionally creating barriers to lock people’s funds and hold onto them as long as possible, using repeated re-verifications as an excuse—even for organizations like ours that have already been properly verified.
As a charitable organization, we hoped that Shopify would understand our unique needs and constraints. However, their process appears to be so flawed and poorly tested, likely because not many of their sellers are charities like us. The suspension and excessive verification processes are wasting valuable time and resources, and this is wasting our focus from our core mission to serve the community.
We urgently request that Shopify lift the restrictions on our account and provide a swift resolution to restore our services. Our store ID is 1fb5e0-5.
If these issues are not addressed promptly, we may have to consider legal action to protect our organization’s interests.
We are prepared to reach out to prominent media outlets to highlight the challenges faced by small businesses using Shopify.
We are a small team dedicated to making a positive impact, and these hurdles are hindering our ability to do so. We kindly ask the Shopify community and support team to assist us in navigating this difficult situation. Any advice, support, or intervention would be immensely appreciated.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
