[URGENT] Shopify Payments payouts paused with NO REASON, over €10,000 held

Hello,

Today, my Shopify Payments payouts were suddenly paused, and a red banner appeared in my admin saying “Payouts are paused – please contact support for help resuming payouts.”
This happened without any prior email, warning, or notification from Shopify.

I can still accept payments normally, but I am unable to receive payouts, and over €10,000 is currently being held. This is causing a serious disruption to my business operations, as I have suppliers, employees, and advertising costs to cover.

I have not received any compliance notice, request for documentation, or explanation for why this action was taken. My store is fully set up with complete business information, policies (refunds, shipping, privacy), and active customer support.

Regarding disputes, I proactively refund customers to avoid escalations. I have no lost chargebacks, and all disputes have been resolved through refunds rather than forced reversals.

I have already contacted Shopify Support and was told the case has been escalated to the Payments team, but I was not given a timeline or any details on what triggered this review.

Has anyone experienced a similar situation where payouts were paused without notice?
How long did it take to resolve, and what information did Shopify require to resume payouts?

Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi.
This typically happens due to an internal Shopify Payments compliance or risk review, which can be initiated without prior notice. Payouts are handled exclusively by the Payments team, and Support cannot release funds or provide detailed triggers.

Resolution timelines vary and depend on whether additional verification is required. Escalation to the Payments team, as you’ve done, is the correct next step.

If you want to avoid facing these kinds of problems, integrate Stripe checkout into your store using third-party solutions instead of Shopify Payments.

My payouts are unblocked!

I got email after 2-3 days of initially contacting support.

Thank you.

Glad to hear your payouts were eventually released.

Situations like this can happen with payment aggregators such as Shopify Payments or Stripe because they operate under pooled merchant accounts and automated risk monitoring systems. Sometimes a temporary review is triggered by factors like transaction patterns, sudden sales increases, or certain product categories.

Even when everything is legitimate, payouts can occasionally be paused while the risk or compliance team reviews activity. In many cases the funds are released once the review is completed, just like what happened in your case.

One small note regarding the suggestion above about switching to Stripe instead of Shopify Payments — Shopify Payments is actually powered by Stripe infrastructure in many regions, so the same type of automated risk reviews can still occur there.

For merchants who are scaling or processing larger volumes, it’s sometimes worth understanding the difference between aggregator payment systems and dedicated merchant accounts, since they handle risk reviews differently.

Either way, it’s good that your payouts were restored. Hopefully everything runs smoothly going forward.

Many merchants also underestimate their real processing costs, especially once cross-border and card-type fees are included.
