Use Higher shipping rate for multiple products instead of combining 2 shipping rates

Topic summary

  • Issue: A store charges $8 shipping for most items and $12.50 for fragile items. When a cart contains both types, Shopify combines rates to $20.50, but the merchant wants to charge only the higher rate ($12.50).

  • Desired behavior: Apply the highest single shipping rate in a mixed cart instead of summing multiple rates.

  • Platform limitation: Shopify’s shipping profiles add rates together when products from different profiles are in the same order. There is no native setting to blend rates or select the highest-only option at checkout.

  • Workaround: Use a third-party shipping rate app capable of custom logic to return the maximum rate (example mentioned: ShipMagic).

  • Status: No built-in solution within Shopify; the practical path is a third-party app. No final decision or additional steps recorded in the thread.

Hi There.

Most of our products have a shipping rate fee of $8, and then our fragile items are $12.50 shipping rate.

When customers purchase a generic product and a fragile product - it is combining the shipping rates of both - meaning they pay $20.50 for shipping.

We want them to only be paying the higher amount of $12.50

Any ideas on how we can make this happen??

Hi,

Unfortunately this is a limitation of Shopify’s shipping profiles. You cannot blend the rates to show highest rate only. It adds up the rates by default and their is no way to change this behaviour.

If you absolutely need to have this, you will have to use a third party app like ShipMagic to do so.
