Users cannot choose recurring shipment options

We have a subscription app and our merchants need to give customers the ability to choose recurring shipment options in the checkout. Recent changes (https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/purchase-options/subscriptions/setup#customer-checkout-experience) now force the recurring shipment option to the cheapest available one.

This creates problems when merchants use pickup location apps, or have other more specialised delivery options that customers can select. I have attached an example screenshot below where you can see an app does not allow the customer to use their preferred pickup location for recurring orders due to this new rule:
