Using Google Analytics 4 (GA4) on the Basic Shopify Plan

Hey guys,

I’d like to know what is being done about Google Analytics 4 (GA4). We currently cannot apply GA4 to our account on the Shopify basic plan, support have confirmed this.

It’s unacceptable for us to tell our clients that they need to upgrade to the $80 a month plan to apply GA4 – that is unhelpful to them. Is there any plan to update the site so GA4 can be used on the basic plan?

Hi Tsm2,

Thanks for asking that important question. Unfortunately, Shopify’s existing policy requires that store owners upgrade to the ‘Shopify Plus Plan’. Only then can a store owner integrate Google Tag Manager code into their website.

Here’s a link to the official statement and process:

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/reports-and-analytics/google-analytics/google-tag-manager

Keep in mind that even after paying for the upgrade to Shopify Plus ($80.00 a month USD) a store owner is still unable to add *Universal Analytics for Google Analytics, **Classic Google Analytics, or **Facebook Pixel.

The fun doesn’t stop there. Store owners need to learn or know how to Google Tag Manager snippets to the [.checkout.liquid] file.

I’ve been a Google Analytics Certified Professional for several years. Handling those tasks are not difficult for me, but for store owners who do not Code it those tasks can be overwhelming.

Good Luck,
