So I payed for someone to sort some coding that made my variants appear as separate products on my collection pages. I now however can’t have each product variant filtered separately when using the product filter. I need a work around!

Yes it will not because it’s the default of the shopify.
I suggest call the guy again and ask him to write a custom solution for it.

Not gonna be a workaround for custom coding like that you have to either gut it or invest in fleshing out the entire process.
