Video Background not working on low-power mode on mobile device.

Topic summary

Main issue: A homepage video background works on desktop and standard mobile, but does not play when a mobile device is in Low Power Mode (battery-saver). The requester sought a way to force playback or a fallback image.

Latest update: A participant confirms mobile Low Power Mode commonly disables background/autoplay videos to conserve battery and cannot be overridden via the website.

Workaround provided: Add a “cover photo” in the Video Background section so devices in Low Power Mode display an image instead of a blank area.

  • Recommended aspect ratio and size: vertical 3:4 or 650×890 px.
  • Behavior outcome: desktop = video; mobile (normal) = video; mobile in Low Power Mode = cover photo.

Status: No direct technical fix to force video under Low Power Mode. Practical resolution is to use a cover photo fallback. No further actions decided; thread appears resolved with the workaround.

I have been trying my best to find a solution, however it looks like this may just be how it is (at least from previously dated posts) - I’m hoping maybe there is a solution still!

I have a video background on my homepage, which looks great on desktop and on a mobile device EXCEPT for when the mobile device has ‘low power mode’ switched on (which I personally always do). Is there a way to still get this video to work, whether or not the viewer has ‘low power mode’ turned on on their device?

OR as a workaround, is there a way to have the mobile-viewers see a photograph rather than the video?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey There,

Can you please share the Store URL, so better we look into it?

Thank you

Hi Nayan,
My store is yet to go live, and I have a password on it - is there a way I can show you without allowing the public to also view the website?

As a workaround for anyone else - I’ve just realised, if you upload a cover photo within the Video Background section, that works for phones on low power mode. So at least its not a blank space! So desktop = video, mobile device = video, mobile device on low power mode = cover photo.
The cover photo must be in a vertical orientation 3:4 or 650x890 px

Hope this helps someone else!

Unfortunately, low power mode on mobile devices often disables background videos to save battery, and there isn’t a direct way to override this behavior
