Want to Move My Blogs to a Different Category Without Redirection

Topic summary

A user wants to reorganize over 250 blog posts from a single category (“hair-care”) into 5-6 new categories (“hair-solutions,” “hair-tips,” “hair-products,” etc.) on Shopify without using 301 redirects.

Key Concerns:

  • Preserve existing SEO rankings and link equity
  • Selectively move individual posts to different categories rather than bulk-changing all posts
  • Avoid the typical redirect approach when changing URL structure

Support Response:
The Avada support team initially suggested changing the blog handle through Shopify’s “Manage Blogs” section, which would update the category slug in URLs. However, they clarified this method applies changes to entire blog categories, not individual posts.

Outcome:
The support team concluded that selectively moving individual blog posts to different categories without redirects is not possible within Shopify’s current functionality. They recommended contacting Shopify Support directly for potential alternative solutions.

Status: Unresolved - the user’s specific requirement appears to exceed platform capabilities.

Hi everyone,

I want to move my current blog posts from the structure:

Domain.com/blogs/hair-care

to

Domain.com/blogs/hair-solution.

However, I don’t want to use 301 redirects as I prefer to simply shift the blogs from the “Hair Care” category to the new “Hair Solution” category directly.

Most of these blogs are ranking well, and I don’t want to risk losing my SEO performance. Is there a way to achieve this without negatively impacting rankings or traffic?

Hi @Naitik

Changing the URL as you mentioned will naturally impact your SEO. Search engine bots will need time to re-crawl and re-index the updated content; it’s not as simple as just changing the URL.

It seems you want to change the product handle of the page, right? If so, then you can open the page setting and check it here: https://prnt.sc/tz16ECNUBtkF

Thank you!

Hi @DaisyVo ,

Thank you for your response!

While I understand the SEO impact, my concern is slightly different. We can create category pages in Shopify, my question is: how can I “move” a blog post to a new category without redirecting it?

I want to address content taxonomy by reorganizing blogs into a more relevant structure for my content. For example:

Now, I’ve created a new category, and I want to move this blog to:

Normally, I’d use a 301 redirect to transfer the URL, but in this case, I’d like to move the blog entirely while ensuring that the link equity is preserved and it’s redefined under the new category.

Could you please advise if Shopify supports this kind of migration, or if there’s an alternative way to achieve it?

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Hi @Naitik

You can consider checking my screenshots below to change the handle right behind /blogs/

Here is my sample page: https://abc-clothes12.myshopify.com/blogs/news/10-wardrobe-essentials-every

In this case, I will need to change the /news/ from the blog post link

1/ Online store > Blog posts > Manage blogs: https://prnt.sc/fUrd762GxYEF

2/ Select “News”: https://prnt.sc/fU3aVsLyxCdc

3/ And edit it here: https://prnt.sc/k_SF62E0_ClY

Please let me know if it works. Thank you!

Hi @DaisyVo ,

Thank you for the reference and detailed guidance. However, I still have some concerns, and I hope you can clarify them.

I understand how to change the category from the “Manage Blogs” section, but my situation involves over 250 URLs currently grouped under one category. I want to split these blogs into 5–6 different categories, without applying a blanket change to all blogs within the original category. For example, I want to move some blogs from:

Current URL: domain.com/blogs/hair-care

to:

New URLs:

  1. domain.com/blogs/hair-solutions
  2. domain.com/blogs/hair-tips
  3. domain.com/blogs/hair-products

However, I don’t want all the blogs under “hair-care” to simply shift to “hair-solutions.” Instead, I want to selectively assign each blog to its appropriate new category without using 301 redirects. My aim is to restructure the content taxonomy while ensuring the SEO performance and ranking of these blogs are not negatively impacted and without losing my link equity in the process.

Could you please advise if Shopify supports this kind of migration, or if there is an alternative way to achieve this?

Looking forward to your insights!
