Is there a way to save user’s variant picks on any given product so when the user comes back to purchase the same item, their preferences from last time are automatically selected?
If this is not a native function, does anyone know of an app that can get this done?

Not quite. A simple example of what I’m looking for, customer comes in, buys a red shirt and chooses the large variant for the size. When customer comes back to buy that red shirt again, large is already pre-selected.

Shopify does save the cart in a short period of time. If you try to go to your website, add a product in your cart. If you close the browser, it does save it but I think it is just a few days. Unfortunately, to save the cart for long time, it does need backend coding and cannot be done with just editing the theme
