My idea was to create a store called QBPOS and then duplicate the original sales invoice from QBPOS in that store. This will allow me to return that item at one of my other shops. Anything “purchased” at my QBPOS store could be filtered out for tax and accounting purposes.
Topic summary
Shopify POS lacks a way to process in-person returns/exchanges without the original receipt, since checkout does not allow negative quantities and returns must be tied to an order. This conflicts with brick-and-mortar workflows that avoid collecting customer data and offer exchanges or store credit without receipts.
Migration issue: Orders from QuickBooks POS (QBPOS) do not transfer, blocking 60‑day returns for sales made before the switch.
Impacts: Staff are paying cash back and re-selling new items, with unclear accounting. Manual inventory adjustments are seen as error-prone and create daily reconciliation work.
Workarounds discussed:
- Create a separate “QBPOS” store, duplicate the original QBPOS invoice there, then process returns at other shops; filter those sales out for tax/accounting. Effectiveness not confirmed.
- Third‑party app (“Return without receipt”): add items to cart, tap an app tile to issue a gift card equal to the merchandise value (supports physical/e‑gift cards). One user resolved setup confusion. Pricing is $39/month; nonprofit discounts available via email. Link provided is central to the discussion.
Status: No native Shopify POS feature for receiptless returns or negative quantities. Participants seek a built‑in solution; thread remains open with stopgaps only.
