Shopify merchants are encountering unexpected ACH debits labeled “SHOPPAYINST AFRM PAYMENTS” appearing in their bank accounts, ranging from $14 to $144. These are charges (money leaving accounts), not deposits.
Official Explanation:
Shopify support indicates these relate to Shop Pay Installments, where Affirm processes customer payments separately from regular Shopify Payments payouts. However, this explanation doesn’t address why merchants are being charged rather than paid.
Merchant Theories:
One user speculates these may be refunds for orders originally paid via Shop Pay Installments—when customers cancel, merchants get charged back
The exact mechanism and categorization remain unclear
Current Status:
No definitive answer provided. Support directs users to contact live chat for account-specific investigation. Multiple merchants report the same issue but haven’t received clear explanations. Some are categorizing these as general Shopify expenses and moving on, despite uncertainty about the root cause.

I’ve got a couple of expenses in my QuickBooks account with the memo line SHOPPAYINST AFRM PAYMENTS BAS*55. They are expenses that hit my checking account not deposits or payments. One for $51.00 and one for $14.00. Does anyone know where in the system I could find out what those are for? TIA
Thanks for getting in touch, and I’d be more than happy to explain what’s going on here.
Have you recently set up Shop Pay Installments on your Shopify Store? If, so, these statement descriptors refer to the Shop Pay Installment payments made, these go to the same bank account as your payouts. They are sent in batches separately from Shopify Payments payouts. Affirm is responsible for collecting payments from your customers.

SpartaBooks clearly stated that they got a charge, not a payment. Unfortunately, your response doesn’t clear any of this up. I have just found several charges made by SHOPPAYINST AFRM PAYMENTS for close to $100 each time, I don’t use shoppay affirm to purchase anything online.
I also have the same issue in my account and need to figure out what this payment is being pulled out of my account for. Please advise shopify, thank you!

haha, NO!! Just going to throw it into the shopify expenses category and keep it moving because it’s Shopify or Uncle Sam getting it not me, and sometimes thats life
I see that this is an accepted solution, and I accept that.
That said, this method does not include a description as to WHY the charge came through in the first place.
This isn’t the end of the world, I’m not mad, but this debit only happened two times, and this source account is usually paying me rather than pulling money. Just going to stick it into a column and be done with it
i am having this issue as well. my guess is that its when a customer who used shoppay installments to pay for a product and then requests a cancellation or refund, they charge you the refund. ?? idk how to categorize it though
