Apart from basic points, how can I make my loyalty program engaging and unique?
Topic summary
The discussion explores ways to enhance Shopify loyalty programs beyond basic point systems. Several strategies are recommended:
Tiered & VIP Systems:
- Create multiple membership levels with escalating benefits like early product access, birthday gifts, VIP support, or free returns
- Offer exclusive experiences such as personal styling sessions or early Black Friday access to drive engagement
Engagement Tactics:
- Implement gamification through challenges, quizzes, and seasonal promotions
- Run time-limited events like double points weekends on specific collections
- Reward actions beyond purchases: reviews, referrals, social shares, and zero-party data collection
Flexible Rewards:
- Offer diverse redemption options including store credit, free shipping, surprise gifts, or charitable donations
- Provide milestone-based surprises after 3-6 months of customer loyalty
Integration Options:
- Connect loyalty programs with email, SMS, WhatsApp, and referral systems
- Consider subscription-based loyalty clubs with exclusive perks
Multiple Shopify apps are mentioned as implementation tools: Smile, LoyaltyLion, 99minds, Loloyal, and AiTrillion. Real merchant examples include Represent Clothing, Rat & Boa, and The INKEY List demonstrating successful program execution.
Develop an original loyalty scheme on Shopify; this loyalty program should have VIP levels with various advantages.
Some of the things that can be included are special occasions and individual styling.
Provide rewards that support a cause and make customers feel they are acting sustainably for greater emotional connection.
Involve clients by offering games in which they can win points as well as interesting seasonal promotions.
Form a loyalty association that requires customers to pay subscription fees but to enjoy special offers such as free deliveries or surprise parcels.
To do this, use applications like Smile or LoyaltyLion.

Hi @William96
That’s a great question!
One idea is to build out a VIP tier system where customers unlock extra perks the more they shop with you, things like early access to new products, birthday gifts, or surprise rewards. That gives them a reason to keep coming back beyond just discounts.
Referral rewards are another one that works well. Instead of spending more on ads, you can reward customers for bringing in their friends. Even a small reward for both sides can be super effective.
You can also try time-limited point events, like offering double points for a weekend or on specific collections. It’s a nice way to drive short-term sales without always running discounts.
Another thing that helps is offering flexible rewards. Not everyone wants a discount, some customers might prefer free shipping or a free gift instead.
I would suggest an app called Loloyal to manage this kind of setup. It’s pretty easy to use and lets you mix and match rewards, run referral programs, and customize the experience to your brand. Worth a look if you’re trying to go beyond the basics.
Let me know if you want to bounce around ideas, happy to help!
Hiya, Sarah from LoyaltyLion here to share a few cool examples of what our customers have done!
-
Use early access to product drops to make members feel special like Represent Clothing do
-
Use loyalty program tiers to give customers access to better perks such as VIP support or free returns like Rat & Boa do
-
Incentivize customers to complete quizzes and share zero-party data, like the INKEY List.
-
Give members password access to a locked-down Black Friday site a day ahead of everyone else like P&Co have done
-
Offer top tier loyalty members money-can’t-buy experiential rewards such as personal styling sessions to drive FOMO from lower tiers. That’s what Never Fully Dressed did.

Hello @William96 ,
I hope you are well!
There are various points where Loyalty points can be unique such as:
1.) Loyalty integration with Email/SMS/Whatsapp/Flows
2.) Loyalty points redemption with Store credit
3.) Loyalty points on leaving a Reviews
4.) Loyalty points with tiered rewards which is integrated with customer account.
5.) Loyalty with referrals
6.) Loyalty points schedule on special ocassion.
This all can be done with the help of AiTrillion. If you want to know more feel free to let me know.

You can encourage more engagement in your loyalty program by introducing tiered rewards, secret perks for repeat customers, surprise bonuses on birthdays or milestones, and gamified challenges, like “shop three times this month for a prize.” Establish community-based incentives (refer a friend, share reviews) to increase continued participation.
Creative loyalty programs are most effective when they feel personal, rather than transactional. A few ideas that Shopify merchants are loving:
-
Tiered rewards that make customers feel like VIPs as they engage more.
-
Action-based points for reviews, referrals, or social shares.
-
Milestone surprises — gifts or bonuses after 3 or 6 months of support.
-
Mission-driven perks — reward eco-friendly choices or donations.
It’s all about building long-term trust and genuine connection, that’s the heart of good customer retention
Great question — most loyalty programs fail because they’re just “collect points, get a discount.”
The key is to make it feel like a game, not a spreadsheet. ![]()
For example, you can add:
-
Quests for onboarding (reward new customers for completing simple actions like first purchase or newsletter signup)
-
Collectible badges or trophies for discovering products or collections
-
Streaks for repeat visits or monthly purchases (with visual progress)
That’s exactly what we built with LevelUp Rewards — a gamified loyalty system for Shopify that combines quests, trophies, and engagement streaks.
It turns your customers into fans who want to come back just to level up — not just to redeem points ![]()
Hi @william96! To make a loyalty program stand out, think beyond points → make it feel like belonging.
Here are some unique ways to do that:
Tier names that match your brand story
Instead of “Silver / Gold / VIP,” use names that fit your niche so customers feel like they’re leveling up.
Rewards that aren’t discounts
People get desensitized to coupons. Try rewards like:
-
Early access to new drops
-
Limited edition items
-
Free gift on their 3rd or 5th order
Make it feel personal
Send personal milestones:
-
“You’ve been with us 6 months — here’s a surprise perk.”
-
“You hit 3 purchases — unlock a mystery reward.”
Community-only benefits
Exclusive group (FB / Discord) where members see sneak peeks, vote on new products, or help choose upcoming designs.
Experience-based rewards
Example:
-
Unlock a virtual styling call
-
Get a behind-the-scenes video of new products being made
People don’t just want points.
They want to feel like they’re part of something special. Hope it helps, good day!
